BiKe magazine, Aug. 97,
suggested asking several questions when choosing your advanced training:
Check the training offered. Recent test
trainees need more 'basic' tuition, more experienced riders need more 'advanced' lessons.
'Blue Riband Advanced', our intensive
course for experienced riders, with content based mainly on the Police 'Roadcraft'
advanced riding manual. Check the mileage
covered during the day. Covering huge mileages and trying to learn advanced techniques
isn't easy.
Blue Riband includes four on-road
riding sessions of approx. 45 - 50 miles each.
(Note: Riders taking this course need to be
used to riding for long distances, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.)
The instructor to pupil ratio should ideally be two or one-to-one. More and you
struggle to learn.
Blue Riband riding sessions are usually
at 1:1.
Check the balance of the lesson. Is it practical
on-road lessons or mixed with classroom lessons? There should be a balance.
The 'Blue Riband Advanced Award' course
starts with a detailed briefing pack posted to you, including the book 'The Assessment of
Advanced Riding'. The theory pack also includes: 'Roadcraft' study guide (with
emphasis on hazard perception, observation techniques, positioning, cornering, machine
dynamics and overtaking), loan video tapes, question papers and briefing sheets.
